Ownership audit, October 2026: findings

Round 29 (docs/READER_V29.md §2; docs/BALANCE_PLAN.md Part 1). Every guarantee in balance.ts rests on ownerKey, so one missing link gives a group two turns. Researched by a subagent with web access on 4–5 October 2026; the round's session saved it here and checked the Kannada Prabha pages itself (§1, "Checked again").

  • Scope: the 29 public outlets whose record had an owner but no group, plus Sanjevani and That's Kannada (no owner on record). Each one's record in src/lib/public/outlet-facts-data.ts was read first.
  • The control test. An outlet gets a group only when a source says that a company, trust or other body either:
    • (a) holds more than 50% of the publishing company, directly or through subsidiaries; or
    • (b) is otherwise said to control it ("a subsidiary of", "wholly owned by", "controlled by").
    • A minority stake without control is a note, not a group. The precedent is Quint Digital's 47.92% of Spunklane Media.
    • A single natural person who controls a publisher is a fact for the notes, not a group, unless that person also controls another outlet on the public list: that is a cross-link.
  • Method:
    • credit-rating rationales (Acuité);
    • company records on Tofler. Zauba Corp and The Company Check returned 403 to every fetch;
    • the outlets' own terms, privacy and about pages;
    • Newslaundry's "Who owns your media" series and The Quint's ownership page;
    • Media Ownership Monitor India (MOM). Its data is from 2018–19, said wherever it is cited;
    • web searches, used only to find leads. Every source cited was opened.

Kannada Prabha and Asianet Suvarna News: confirmed, with a question for the owner

Confirmed. Acuité, 20 May 2026 (ACUITE BBB- | Negative | Reaffirmed), https://connect.acuite.in/fcompany-details/ASIANET_NEWS_NETWORK_PRIVATE_LIMITED/20th_May_26:

  • "The company has two subsidiaries namely Kannada Prabha publications limited (KPPL) and Asianet Media and entertainment FZ LLC(AMEFLLC)."
  • "Asianet News Network Private Limited (ANNPL) is a subsidiary of Asianxt Digital Technologies Private Limited (ADTPL) (Formerly Asianet News Media & Entertainment Private Limited (ANMEPL)) which is owned by Jupiter Capital Private Limited (JCPL)."
  • Acuité rates ANNPL on a standalone basis. ANNPL had lent KPPL Rs 104.02 crore in inter-corporate deposits, net of provision, by 31 March 2025.

The February 2025 rationale says the same: https://www.acuite.in/documents/ratings/revised/29403-RR-20250221.pdf ("KPPL operates a newspaper named Kannada Prabha").

afaqs (1 February 2024): Asianxt "also owns Asianet News Network, featuring news brands such as Asianet News (Malayalam), Asianet Suvarna News (Kannada) and the Kannada Prabha daily": https://www.afaqs.com/companies/asianet-news-media-entertainment-is-now-asianxt-digital-technologies

The 51%: Newslaundry (5 February 2024), https://www.newslaundry.com/2024/02/05/who-owns-your-media-new-indian-express-through-disputes-dreams-on-road-to-recovery:

  • In 2010 the daily and its assets were transferred to Kannada Prabha Publications Ltd.
  • By mid-2011, 51% of KPPL was sold to Asianet News Network Pvt Ltd.
  • Express Publications (Madurai) has 49% in its associate company KPPL.

Who controls Asianet News Network: Asianxt Digital Technologies, which Jupiter Capital owns (Acuité, above). MOM's Jupiter Capital page gives Rajeev Chandrasekhar 97.53% of Jupiter Capital (last changed 28 May 2019): https://india.mom-gmr.org/en/owners/companies/detail/company/company/show/jupiter-capital/. He is a natural person, so that is a note.

The question: who runs the site Huduku reads. Huduku takes Kannada Prabha's headlines from kannadaprabha.com (https://www.kannadaprabha.com/stories.rss?time-period=last-24-hours). That site's own pages name the Express side, not Asianet:

  • Privacy policy, https://kannadaprabha.com/privacy-policy: Express Network Private Limited (ENPL) "is a sister concern of Express Publications (Madurai) Private Limited", which publishes Kannada Prabha among others, and ENPL "has been granted license by EPML to host the content" on sites including kannadaprabha.com. The contact block names the "Assistant Editor of kannadaprabha.com, Express Network Private Limited".
  • About page, https://kannadaprabha.com/about-us: Express Network runs www.kannadaprabha.com among seven sites; in Kannada, the site calls itself a news portal owned by The New Indian Express Group.
  • Express Network's company record, https://www.tofler.in/express-network-private-limited/company/U22219TN1999PTC048505: three directors, each named Sonthalia; registered office in Chennai; shares directors with Express Publications (Madurai) and Kannada Prabha Publications Ltd. Its shareholders aren't on the free page.
  • The dispute (Newslaundry, February 2024, above): ANN petitioned the tribunal against KPPL and Express Publications (Madurai), alleging oppression and mismanagement; the NCLT disposed of it in 2019 and let ANNPL put money into KPPL; Express Publications appealed to the NCLAT, still pending at the 2023 annual report. KPPL's financial details aren't reported while the matter is sub judice.

What this means. The control test is met for the newspaper's company: KPPL is ANNPL's subsidiary. The website whose headlines Huduku shows says it is run by Express Network under a licence from Express Publications (Madurai). No other public outlet is on the Express (Sonthalia) side, so counting Kannada Prabha with Express would make no cross-link either way. Round 29 follows the plan (the newspaper's company, so one owner with Asianet Suvarna News) and puts the website's operator in the ownerNote; the owner may decide otherwise (READER_V29.md, "Still open").

These were checked specifically:

  • Quint Digital. Its only stake in a listed outlet is 47.92% of Spunklane, a minority stake. It sold Quintillion Business Media (BQ Prime) to AMG Media Networks (Adani) in 2023; The Quint says that acquisition "was limited to QBML" and did not extend to The Quint (13 August 2024): https://www.thequint.com/news/understanding-the-ownership-of-the-quint-and-clearing-common-misconceptions
  • Express Publications (Madurai) and The Indian Express: separate companies with separate controllers (§3).
  • Malayala Manorama: about 100 family shareholders, no single controller.
  • Public TV and NewsFirst Live: different directors, no common holding company on Tofler.
  • Vishwavani: directors K. P. Nanjundi Vishwakarma and Vishweshwar Bhat; no parent company.
  • Hosadigantha and Samyukta Karnataka: one a company, the other a trust; nothing links them.
  • Newslaundry and The News Minute: Newslaundry is a minority investor in Spunklane, and has no single controller itself.
  • Against the grouped outlets (ABP, India Today, Reliance, The Printers (Mysore), The Hindu, KK Birla, Adani, RP-Sanjiv Goenka, EBC, The Times Group, The Wire, TV9, VRL): no common control with any audited outlet.

2. Group changes

The subagent proposed "Jupiter Capital", the top body Acuité names. Round 29 uses "Asianet News Network", the company the Acuité page names as Kannada Prabha Publications' parent and Asianet Suvarna News's publisher: it groups the same two outlets, and the ownerNote names Jupiter Capital.

3. Facts for notes, not groups

4. Checked, nothing found

None of these has a parent body that meets the test, or a cross-link.
